“How can biomorphological architecture become contextually narrative in a preserved harbour lagoon ?”
In 2009, Hafnarfjordur claimed reservation over Hvaleyrarlon with the intension that its educational value is high and therefore an excellent choice for civil recreation. The lagoon is an important reservoir of vivid bird life and well connected to the center and proximity to schools and kindergardens an obvious quality. Since the preservation document is only a draft, it doesn´t provide any perspectives on how those qualities could be addressed or how its ecological fitness can be restored.
Isthmus is positioned by the main pedestrian paths from the city center and nearby residential areas. The bridge is a narrative composition of several functions that curves over the water surface and adjust precisely according to the ecological context. The expressive structure is morphed from a birdbone, found on the site, and is meant to raise awareness of the interdependence of birdlife and nature. The combinations of different functions create strong relationship between movement, form and structure. Successive sections through the structure reveal varieties of spaces and functions that are dynamic in all directions, from above, within, from the sides, down below, engaging the water surface.
The project was awarded the 1st price VOLA AWARDS from Aarhus School of Architecture.
