Studio Constructing an Archive
The aim of the studio programme is to focus on each student’s individual development of an artistic production – an architectural proposal – a project.
A further purpose is to create an intensive workspace where the production of each student becomes a part of the whole and which provides everyone with an opportunity to immerse themselves in their work.
There will be continuous discussions of individual and collective work via tutorials and reviews.
At Studio Constructing an Archive we have a particular interest in visual media and architectural representations. Our programme revolves around architecture and the exchanges between architecture and art. It focuses on investigations of the potential of different forms of architectural representation, and how a critical approach to architectural representation, methods and processes can inform the making and thinking of architecture. In our programme we pay attention to the different ways architects use representations when they design, analyze, present or exhibit architecture.
“Joint Studio” with CAFA, School of Architecture
Within the framework of a new teaching format – “joint studio” - we will begin an experimental collaboration and exchange programme with teachers and graduate students from CAFA, School of Architecture in Beijing. In the fall 2012 semester we will visit China and stay approximately 6 weeks at CAFA (October-November). In the fall 2013 semester our Chinese colleagues – teachers and students – will come to Aarhus, where we will again work together in the context of our “joint studio”. (NB: to be confirmed!)
Studio brief: spring semester
2013 1:1 space – the installation
During the coming semester, it will especially be the installation and its media characteristics that we will be studying. We will be investigating the installation as a medium for architectural documentation, analysis, composition and presentation.
Recently we have in the studio worked with the architectural model, drawing and collage as instigators of experiments with various forms of representation. We have explored the archive, the collection and the architectural exhibition as medium and representation. These experiments and this exploration will continue next semester. The studies will include reading of theory, analyses of architectural typologies, design methods and processes.
Important events/activities during the semester will be:
• Study trip / excursion
• International seminar on representation: Installation |Method |Process
• Testing 1:1 in situ
The working language of the studio will be Danish and English.

The context-collage
During the forthcoming term it will, in particular, be the collage and its media characteristics which we will be discussing. We will specifically investigate the collage as a medium for architectural analysis, composition and imagery. Furthermore we will investigate it as a design method and an architectural strategy. The studies of the previous two semesters have been carried out with the drawing and the model as the instigators of experiments in representation. The studies have dealt with explorations of archives, collections and a specific context. These explorations will continue. The programme of the semester will consist of theoretical readings, analysis of architectural works, design methods and processes.
Important events/activities during the semester will be:
- Lecture series on China and Chinese culture
- Studytrip to China and studies at CAFA, School of Architecture
- International seminar on representation: Collage|Method|Process
The working language of the studio will be Danish and English.

Last semestre's study programme
We will aim at obtaining a specific knowledge of production, methods and media focusing on light and its existing or applied representation in architecture. A further aim is to develop new insights and new modes of architectural representation. The collective production as well as the individual production will constantly be discussed within the studio context and will be communicated within a broader context.
We aim to incorporate into the programme elements such as current agendas, internships, architectural practices, workshops, theory seminars, studies abroad, co-operations, etc. so that all elements of the programme address the studies to as great an extent as possible.
We are working on establishing a co-operation with CAFA – China Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing, China) for the purpose of exchange studies in 2012, for students of the studio as well as for its teachers.
As this studio will be carried out as an experiment, the programme will be subject to change: the order of programme elements may consequently change.
Studio brief: spring semestre 2012
The model cabinet
In the newly established studio we focus on architectural representation and its influence on the development of architecture. During the forthcoming term it will, in particular, be the model and its media characteristics which we will be discussing. We will specifically investigate the model as a medium for architectural analysis, contemplation and design.
The studies of the present semester have been carried out with the drawing as the instigator of experiments in representation. The studies have dealt with explorations of archives, collections and the city of Viborg. These explorations will continue. The programme of the forthcomming semester will consist of theoretical readings, analysis of architectural works, design methods and processes.
Important events/activities during the semester will be:
- Study trip to London: OMA/Progress
- Light and representation workshop
- International seminar on representation: Model|Method|Process
- Theory seminar
- Digital Workshop: Models
- Model workshop (international guests)
