STUDIO BUILDING DESIGN
STUDIO BUILDING DESIGN is run by the platforms Digital Tectonics (DT) and Materiality and Spatial Experience (M + SE)
STUDIO BUILDING DESIGN is the study of architecture, with emphasis on the basic parameters, structure, design, production and materials. The goal is an integrated architecture, where the buildings exterior appearance and inner structure are connected as a whole. In other word a tectonic integrity. This aims towards a career as a practicing architect.
Tuition will be given from the two platforms. This allows the exploration and experimentation of advanced digitally generated design and production on one hand as well as physical experiments, based on craftsmanship and natural building materials on the other. Establishing connections and crossovers within this range will be obviously be creating a synergy between the digital and analogue approaches.
Man, body and the senses will together constitute the point of departure for the programme and the scale of the architecture to be designed. This implies work ranging on a scale from very small houses (with possibility of realisation in 1:1) to larger buildings (1:200).
The assignment for the spring semester 2013 (F13) will be to design a restaurant based on the principals of teh New Nordic Kitchen. The restaurant will be situated in Aarhus and will be made entirely out of bricks. Taking this basic building material as a point of departure the challenge will be to develop architecture with a high degree of integrity (what you see is what it is) Thus the building will gradually evolve through the simple act of stacking the bricks in formations and spaces that we call architecture. In other words, we start with a material and end with atrchitecture.
In studio BUILDING DESIGN model-making represents an essential tool in developing architecture. Therefore students are requested to master a broad range of model making techniques and skills as well as being familiar with the use of the different workshop facilities at the school. This is very important in order to achieve the full effect of the studio.
